Chimney Repointing

A chimney stack stands above the roof in all weathers, so it is often the first part of a house to show its age. Mortar joints crack and wash out, the flaunching on top splits, pots work loose and the lead where the stack meets the tiles lifts away, letting rain run down inside the roof.

Chimney repointing rakes out the worn mortar and refills the joints so the brickwork is solid and watertight again. Flashings are renewed where they have failed, the flaunching is rebuilt and loose pots are reset, so the whole stack is dealt with rather than one symptom.

Signs Your Chimney Needs Work

A chimney problem is easiest to fix while it is still on the outside of the house.

Crumbling Mortar

Joints that are recessed, sandy or missing let water soak into the brickwork and the stack weakens year by year.

Damp Round the Breast

Staining on a chimney breast or a ceiling beside it often means the flashing or the stack itself is letting rain in.

Loose or Leaning Pots

A pot that moves in the wind, or flaunching that has cracked, can fall and damage the roof tiles below.

Lifted Flashings

Lead that has pulled away where the stack meets the roof leaves a gap that rain runs straight through.

Why Choose Us

Why Choose Us for Your Chimney

Chimney work that deals with the whole stack, priced once the chimney has been looked at properly.

The Whole Stack Checked

Pointing, flaunching, pots and flashings are all looked at, so a repointing job is not undone by a flashing left to fail.

Proper Repointing

Worn mortar is raked out to a sound depth before the joints are refilled, so the new pointing bonds and lasts.

Roof & Chimney Together

Tiles and lead around the stack are part of the same job, so the chimney and the roof meet watertight.

Speak to the Owner

FAQs

Chimney Repair Questions

What Is Chimney Repointing?

Repointing means raking out the old, worn mortar between the bricks of a chimney stack and refilling the joints with fresh mortar. It stops rain soaking into the brickwork and keeps the stack solid.

How Do I Know If My Chimney Needs Repointing?

Look for mortar that is crumbling, sandy or sitting well back from the face of the bricks, gaps between bricks, or damp on the chimney breast inside. Any of these usually means the joints are letting water in.

Why Is There Damp Around My Chimney Breast?

The usual causes are failed lead flashings where the stack meets the roof, worn pointing, cracked flaunching on top of the stack or an uncapped pot. Checking the chimney from the roof shows which one it is.

Can a Loose Chimney Pot Be Refixed?

Yes. A loose pot is usually reset in new flaunching, the sloped mortar bed on top of the stack. A pot that is cracked or broken is replaced.

Do You Replace the Lead Flashing Around a Chimney?

Yes. Flashings that have lifted, cracked or lost their pointing are renewed as part of chimney repairs, so the joint between the stack and the roof is watertight again.

How Do I Arrange a Chimney Repair?

Call 0800 158 8240 or send the quote form with your postcode and a short note about the problem. A visit is arranged to look at the chimney before the work is quoted.
